Ibrahim Sjarief Assegaf
Ibrahim joined Assegaf Hamzah & Partners in 2009, having earlier served as director of an Indonesian online legal publisher, and prior to that as an associate at another leading Jakarta law firm, where he focused his considerable energies on the capital-market, mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, and debt-restructuring practices.
Ibrahim is a recognized leader in banking and finance, and is regularly entrusted to represent both domestic and international financial institutions in drafting or advising on corporate and government financing and security documents. In addition, he is frequently called on to advise and represent clients in relation to insolvency/debt-restructuring issues. Recently, he played prominent roles in the acquisition of major Indonesian coal miner Berau Coal, the creation of joint ventures for the development of a series of geothermal power plants, and a number of significant M&A and debt restructuring deals involving companies operating in the airport-services, hospitality, coal-mining and financial-services sectors, including representing ING as financial adviser in the exchange offer by PT Davomas Abadi Tbk. Ibrahim also advised on a number of recent high profile IPOs, most recently by national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and telecommunications tower company PT Tower Bersama Tbk.
Having obtained his undergraduate degree in law from the University of Indonesia in 1997, Ibrahim received a visiting research fellowship at Harvard Law School’s East Asian Legal Studies Program (2002-2003), before going on in 2009 to earn an LL.M from the University of Melbourne, Australia, facilitated by an Australian Development Scholarship (2008-2009).
Ibrahim has played an active role in various law reform initiates, including advising the Indonesian Supreme Court’s high-powered Judicial Reform Committee, as well as a ground-breaking law-reform project funded by the Australian Government.
Among his many other notable achievements, in 2005 he was presented with an Asia Foundation 50th Anniversary Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to legal reform in Indonesia.
Ibrahim has penned a long list of papers and articles on law-related topics, many of which have been published in books, journals and other publications, both domestic and international.
He also manages to find the time to serve on the boards of a number of foundations, including Reefcheck Indonesia and the Indonesian Legal Research Foundation (Yayasan Studi Hukum Indonesia). He also serves on the board of PT Justika Siar Publika (owner and operator of www.hukumonline.com).
