Eko Ahmad Ismail Basyuni

Eko commenced his legal career in 1999 straight after graduating from the University of Indonesia  with a bachelor of law degree. He earned his LL.M. in banking and financial law from Boston University School of Law in 2004, and joined Assegaf Hamzah & Partners in early 2005. He was made a partner of the firm in June 2010.

His focus extends across the corporate, capital market, banking and finance, and investment practices, and he has amassed in-depth experience and expertise in an array of sectors, including mining and energy, ICT, plantations, banking, oil and gas, retailing, broadcasting, telecommunications, and infrastructure.

Prior to joining AHP, Eko served as legal counsel with the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA) during a tumultuous period that saw the agency rebuild the country’s decimated financial services sector from the ruins of the 1997/98 Asian financial crisis. This provided Eko with invaluable first-hand experience of the banking industry that continues to serve him and his clients at AHP well to this day.

In the financial-services sector, Eko has been privileged to advise a host of blue-chip clients, including Citigroup Global Markets Asia Ltd., PT Macquarie Capital Securities Indonesia, PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk, Raiffeisen Zentralbank Österreich, Avenue Luxembourg Sarl Bank, Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), PT DBS Vickers Securities Indonesia, Islamic Development Bank, and PT Bank Commonwealth, a member of Commonwealth Bank of Australia Group,

Among Eko’s significant representations in recent years are advising PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk on its proposed acquisition of an Indonesian shariah bank, Kuala Lumpur-based Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) on its indirect acquisition of PT Bank Internasional Indonesia Tbk, and Rabobank Nederland on its acquisition of PT Bank Haga and Bank Hagakita. He is currently advising a Malaysian bank on its proposed acquisition of an Indonesian bank.

Other major mandates include a shariah and conventional bond issuance by PT Indosat Tbk, and a rights issue by the Indonesian subsidiary of the world’s biggest cement producer, PT Holcim. He recently represented a leading Korean retailer in its proposed acquisition of one of the largest hypermarket chains in Indonesia.

Eko has particular expertise in the extractive industries and energy sectors, where he has represented such big names as state energy company Pertamina, leading coal miner PT Ithaca Resources, resource-sector conglomerate Barito Group, international power generator Korea Midland Power, and oil and gas firms Star Energy (Kakap) Ltd and PT Petronas Niaga Indonesia.
